Lovely film, but sadly Williams composed the wrong type of music for the Dartmoor scenes..........he found his inspiration from listening to Dvorak, and not to Rafe Vaughn Williams.............the music suited the little house on the prairie, and not the Narracott farm at Iddesleigh........I wonder did Mr.Williams ever visit Dartmoor? I think not!

Almost the same results as Soundtrack Geek Awards :) I didn't have a Worst Score category, but I did find a score worse than The Darkest Hour actually. Check out Rebellion by Klaus Badelt (You can stream it at his website).

Hi Gene

Many thanks for the positive feedback :)

RE Cocoon - I don't have that score, and since it's long out of print it's therefore very expensive to get hold of, so I can't promise anything there I'm afraid.

Regards

Archie

My compliments on your very balanced, articulate, discerning, and professionally knowing review. With you, I also find Legends of the Fall at the top of James Horner's incredibly lengthy list of film scores. For some reason, a few of his instrumental thematic pieces come floating in with words (or at least a haunting strand) already attached. And this score most of all, perhaps because it features the country treated in its story, the plains and prairies I was born and raised in that became a living part of me. Your thoughts, so ably expressed, have prompted me to blow the dust of the notes I have written down back then in a notebook only now being lifted from years in storage.

Did you also happen to write anything on Cocoon that I may find online?

With appreciation and keen interest,

     Gene Ruyle

Hi there. I was wondering if the score for The Great Escape has been used in any other movies? I am sure I heard it before, and it's driving me crazy.

Thank you so much for your wonderful description of one of Elmer Bernstein's greatest film scores. (There are so many!) I have done an analysis of the score on my Bernstein site, Bernstein West: The Art of Film Composer Elmer Bernstein. If you get a chance, please take a quick read. You characterized this work perfectly. Both the music--and the film--are iconic. I too am weary of CGI soup without characters to care about or a storyline to engage me. Thank goodness we have the DVDs and CD releases to enjoy a time when film music and movies were at a higher level of craft.

I completely disagree with you.. My favorite album from the best to the worst are
1. The Deathly hallows Part 2
I like Severus and Lily very much.. The dark theme, and mystery are captured here very well..
2. The Prisoner of Azkaban
I love a window to the past and Buckbeak's flight here..
3. The Deathly Hallows Part 1
Come on guys, obliviate is the best choice to remove hermione's parent's memory.. The Emotion is great. And Farewell to Dobby, the best death scene score i ever watched.
4. The Half-Blood Prince
The Story Begin was awesome and also dumbledore's farewell.
5.The Order of The Phoenix
Dumbledore's army is brilliant, plus fireworks..
6. The Philosopher's stone
Of Course we know the Hedwig theme is from here
7. The Chamber of Secret
This is a copycat from Philosopher's but good enough
8. The Goblet of Fire
Totally Lame. I wish i never watch this Potter.. It's ruin my mood to watch Potter.. Thanks God Potter saved by The Half-Blood Prince..

Comment on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Alexandre Desplat) by Alvaro Soliz

Hi, I almost agree with you because in my site I wrote a similar review about Deathly Hallows Part 2 by Desplat. Surely I can share your opinion about the lack of memorable themes (I wrote the same on my review), but there is still a reason, which is not bad, and Alex Desplat explained it himself: he is never been interested in composing following a sequence by sequence, he just wants to fit his music perfectly into the film, with deep emotion (in his own words: "I like to write horizontally more than vertically, which means I prefer to think about the overall rather than sequence by sequence."). And he achieves that of course, even better than John Williams, because that's the cost of composing themes which can be heard wonderfully in a film: they could not be memorable.
But I find your review a little subjetive rather than objetive. I believe he has done a great job, a great "finale" for one of the most epic sagas ever made. I suggest you to read my review following this URL (It's in Spanish by the way): http://bloghogwarts.com/2011/08/01/critica-y-opinion-sobre-el-soundtrack-de-harry-potter-y-las-reliquias-de-la-muerte-parte-ii/
